Buy Tickets OnlineFather Andrew Rogers will be returning as accompanist for our October Silent Film where we will be featuring the 1927, suspenseful thriller, ‘The Lodger’, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This film, starring Ivor Novello, is considered Alfred Hitchcock’s best silent film. A landlady suspects her new lodger is the madman killing women in London. There will be two 5:30 screening on the 24th and 25th.

The serial killer, known as “The Avenger”, is on the loose in London, murdering blonde women. A mysterious man arrives at the house of Mr. and Mrs. Bunting looking for a room to rent. The Bunting’s daughter is a blonde model and is seeing one of the detectives assigned to the case. The detective becomes jealous of the lodger and begins to suspect he may be the avenger.

Alfred Hitchcock felt that, though he had made several films prior to this, ‘The Lodger’ was his first true suspense film. It is also considered his best silent film.

Based on the book “The Lodger,” by Marie Belloc Lowndes, which was the first book to offer a solution to the Jack The Ripper killings. The book is supposedly based on an anecdote told to the painter  by the landlady when renting a room; she said that the previous tenant had been Jack the Ripper. The book was quite popular in its day, was filmed numerous times, and adapted for the radio multiple times, once with  as the lodger.
