The Music House’s Silent Film Series Presents Ella Cinders starring Colleen Moore with accompaniment by Dale and Gail Zieger!

The talented comedic actor, Colleen Moore, takes the ‘Cinderella Story’ to Hollywood in the classic comedy gem. She plays poor Ella Cinders, a much abused young woman. Her evil step-mother and step-sisters make her life a nightmare. When she wins a local beauty contest she jumps at the chance to get out of her dead-end life and go to Hollywood, where she is promised a job in the movies. When she arrives in Hollywood, she discovers that the contest was a scam and the job non-existent. As described by reviewers at the time, her “pluck and perseverance” would not be deterred.

While Moore’s name may not be well known to most, her comedic timing and physical comedy rivals her silent film era male peers such as Chaplin and Keaton. One cannot watch her and not be reminded of more recent female comedy icons such as Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett.

Born Kathleen Morrison in 1899, Moore began her career during the silent film era. She became the most fashionable and highly paid stars of the era and helped to popularize the bobbed haircut. A huge star in her day, about half of her films are now  considered lost. After a brief hiatus from acting just as sound was added to motion pictures, her four sound pictures released in 1933 and 1934 were not financial successes. Moore retired permanently from screen acting.

After her film career, Moore maintained her wealth through astute investments, becoming a partner in the investment firm Merrill Lynch. She later wrote a “how-to” book about investing in the stock market.

Dale and Gail Zieger

Dale and Gail Zieger accompany this film. The Ziegers are two of our favorite performers at the Music House.

Dale Zieger born in St. Louis Mo. He began piano lessons at 5 and organ lessons at 10 years old and played the Fox Theater organ first time that same year. He began playing professionally at the age of 16 playing for a weekly television show in St. Louis and was an assistant organist for the St. Louis Fox Theater for six years. Dale majored in music at Webster College and Washington University in St. Louis and then joined Conn Organ Corp as Concert Artist, Product Specialist and Organ Designer. He traveled internationally for Conn in Europe, South America, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico and Canada. Dale is now in his 55th year of Professional Organ Performance.

He and his wife Gail are currently co-owners of “Dale and Gail’s Music and Art Gallery” with his Wife Gail in the 1927 Hart Theater in Hart Michigan. This is the home of Gail’s Artwork and their 4 Manual Virtual Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ where there perform organ/piano programs along with Silent Movies with live Theater Organ Accomp.

Gail is a native of West Michigan and has been a professional musician for over 45 years. She is self-taught and is at home at the piano, organ, keyboard, as well as five other instruments. She has also used her talents as a church music director, teacher, and entertainer.
